g--ass

Last week I had some extra time between music therapy sessions so I stopped by a friend's classroom to visit. She teaches 1st grade. I helped her with some rotations she was doing with the kids. Well, I was at a table where the kids had to color pictures a certain color depending on the letter that the word ended with. For example, if the picture was of a door, then the kids had to color it green because it ended with an "r." If the picture was of a hat, they had to color it red because it ended with a "t," and if the picture was of a dress, they had to color it yellow because it ended with an "s."

Well, many of the kids sounded out the words, so that they could hear which letter the word ended with. "d--oh--r. d--oo---r..d-oo-r. door. r." "h--a--t...t" My very absolute favorite was the gas pump picture. The kids didn't know what they were saying, of course. But over and over, kid after kid, as they sounded out the word did the same thing: g---ass. g---ass. g--ass. gas. s" It was really cute!
