Protest against Prop 8

Here are some of the signs that protesters held at a peaceful protest in front of the LDS Oakland Temple recently.

You'll have to watch the slide show for the "Osama bin Laden would vote for Prop 8 sign."

Just one thing that bothers me is that same-sex couples already have all the same civil rights in California as married couples. Prop 8 would not take that away. Many of the people protesting probably do not realize that and are protesting, thinking that they are fighting for rights, when they are not. They are fighting for nothing other than changing the very definition of marriage from being between one man and one woman to being between anyone. What groups will come to the courts later down the road also demanding to change the definition again to include other things, such as plural marriage, marriage to a man and a woman at the same time, or marriage to an animal.

It's like giving a piece of candy to one kid in a room full of kids. Once you give a piece to one, all the others come over and say, "I want one too! Can I have one? Give me a piece! Hey, I deserve some candy!! If you don't give me some candy also then I'm gonna tell on you!!"

I read a blog where someone suggested that if we removed religion from the issue, there would be no issue with same-sex marriage. But, that's just ridiculous. Marriage is, and has been, a religious ceremony across time and across the world. It's not something we just do here, in the United States, it is something that crosses all cultural lines and it should be protected both as a religious ceremony and as a part of world culture.
I really liked your candy analogy, it is spot on.

From what I've heard, it wasn't very peaceful. I'll have to forward an email.

That was the nearest temple for me as a kid. Sad to see all that 'garbage' hanging around.

So, are these friends of yours that went/participated?

I don't understand how even members (mormon, str8 and no on 8 sign) can think it is okay to go against what God has said. It says it right there in the Proclamation that marriage is between a man and a woman.

What I wonder is if they also protested at other religious facilities for other religions who also oppose it. Probably not is what I am guessing.

My Dad was in the Oakland Temple Pageant as a young man and I got to see it when I was 13. I love that temple!

The really scary thing is how this will effect freedom of speech and religon if it does not pass....never mind the fact that the issue was addressed 8 years ago, by the people. Remember tha funny little clause in our founding documents, "by the people, for the people etc." And then there is the old saying, As California goes, so goes the nation...."
