I'm worried about Cloe. She has been showing signs of old age for a while now, and I've been trying to ignore it, but she is obviously in pain at times, even though she is only three.
Tonight she got up from lying on the couch and whimpered, then limped over to me. It wasn't too bad, but I've seen that limp before. She had been outside playing in the snow earlier tonight and may just be sore, but I am worried that she is getting either arthritis in her hips or hip dysplasia. She is overweight, which is pretty common for a lot of labs (she is half lab), and it is so hard to get her to exercise because she is overweight. Since she is overweight she tires out easily is kind of lazy. She also likes to play by lying down and waiting for Daisy (other dog) to run near her at which time Cloe pounces on her. So she is not the one doing all the exercise.
Anyway, I just really worry because I know that the day will come eventually, that dreaded day that all pet owners try to ignore, the day that we try to tell ourselves is at least a decade away, the day when our beloved pets take their final breath and we are there to witness it, when we must put them down because it's just time. I just don't want that time to come any sooner than it has to come for an otherwise happy, healthy dog.

I know how you feel, Tucker our lab, is now 7. He does the limping thing all the time. He's always on a diet, and lazy also. I was just talking to my husband about how good he is, it took us about 2 years to get him trained so well that we have the dog that all the kids come and ask if he can play today. :) To think we only have maybe 5 more years is sad. He is our "fur child" our only son. My daughters brother, etc. I feel for you. I LOVE the pics.

I'm not a dog person, but I know how this feels with my cats. Last summer my mom called from Phx and told me they had to put my cat down. She was 20 years old, so she'd lived a good long kitty life, but still, it was so sad. I know how animals become part of the family, so I always say they get to come to heaven with us.
I'm with you...I just don't wanna think about it! They really are a part of the family but they aren't around long enough!

Did you post this after watching Grey's Anatomy last night?...I come home last night to find my wife crying her eyes out after this old lady died on the show. Just because an old lady kicks the bucket, doesn't mean your dog that's showing signs of pain and old age is going to die. I think I need to be more sympathetic...
Cloe is so AWESOME and beautiful!!! I know what you mean because Jake's family has a chocolate lab, Mordy, experiencing similar symptoms. You are such a FUN and LOVING mom!!!
We love Cloe, and hope that she feels better! She is such a good pup.
