So today's speech by the President of the US was not as overtly controversial as many people and parents had contended that it would be. It didn't seem to have any obvious political agenda or indoctrination, as people were afraid it would. And before I say how I felt about it, let me just say that I would have let my children watch the speech because I believe that they should learn to show respect to the President, regardless of whether or not they believe in his policies. Then I would have talked to my children about it afterward and discussed my concerns.
Now, my opinion of his speech, which I both read last night online, and listened to live today on C-SPAN, is that while he did not overtly attempt to instill his political ideologies on the students of America, the speech did have socialistic undertones. He spoke of the responsibility students have for their country over and over. He talked about their responsibility to their communities, and to their government. And he talked about the expectations that he had, he himself, Barrack Obama, of the students to fulfill their responsibility. It's the phrasing that bothers me. How about saying that our nation, our country expects the students to succeed? instead of "I" expect you to succeed.
Slowly, little by little, we are being attacked, without even realizing it. Here a speech, there a speech. Each time, becoming a little more used to the idea of things that have a socialistic ideology.
Listen to this clip from Glenn Beck. He uses a great example of Halloween, and he also includes a clip by Ezra Taft Benson, which you may have heard already, but it is so telling of what is happening to our nation. I'm sorry I couldn't get the video to load onto the page. Click on the link to take you to the clip - it's worth your time to think about.

I remember watching the video of that woman that he quotes in the beginning of the clip and laughing hysterically. "If I help him, he's gonna help me..." That's so funny and yet so sad!
I think we are both of the same opinion on this subject. However, I do think that it is not socialistic to say that we have a responsibility to our country. No, I don't agree with Joe Biden that it's the patriotic thing to do to pay more taxes :) But I do feel we all have a responsibility to be informed, be productive members of our society, and to stand up to those that threaten the foundation of our country. Part of that is staying in school- so I do think kids have responsibilities to our country AND to the leader of our country.
