OMG vs. XMAS

We posted about X-mas a while back being an abbreviation for Christmas that a lot of people are uncomfortable with.

Lynn explained: "In Spanish the word Cristo (Christ) is abbreviated as X. For example the name Cristobal is often written as Xbal, or Xbl (I won't list all the abbreviations). In German it's the same. When the name Christopher is it's written as Xpher or Xffer."

Even though Lynn offered that explanation, it still bothered me to use the abbreviation, "xmas," just as it bothered many of you. For same reason, it bothers me when people use the acronym, "OMG."

The oft-used acronym "OMG!" is used to express shock and awe. I have noticed lately that people who would not normally take the Lord's name in vain have begun using this expression. Perhaps they are thinking in their head "Oh My Gosh" when they type it. However, to me, it will always imply that you are taking God's name in vain when you use it, because that is how it is generally known to be used.

So please, don't use "omg" anymore. If you can take the time to spell out "Christmas," then take the time to spell out "oh my gosh" you will make me a very happy soul.

I'm with you on that one. I know a lot of people that say "OH Em Gee" like it's a word. It's not. I know a lot of LDS people that use omg on facebook/emails/texting. They mean "oh my gosh" but that is not what I see/read in my head. When inclined, I type 'omgosh!' just to be clear. Of course, the whole 'gosh' vs 'God' conversation is another story.

AMEN SISTA! I totally agree with this post and I agree with you on the abbreviation of Christmas as well. How people can use that acronym and think it doesn't make people think of saying the Lord's name in vain is beyond me.
